Fall Engineering Co-Op

Mantel is a climate tech startup supported by Breakthrough Energy, The Engine and New Climate Ventures. Born out of MIT, Mantel was founded by two MIT scientists and a Harvard MBA to develop the material solution to carbon capture. Our molten borates are designed to operate at the high temperatures found inside boilers, kilns, and furnaces – enabling highly efficient carbon capture that has not been possible until now. Carbon capture can be applied across industry to reduce emissions - and even achieve net-negative emissions. By solving for efficiency Mantel can reduce energy losses to near-zero and cut costs in half, unlocking carbon capture’s role in reaching net-zero emissions globally.

Mantel is looking for a Fall Engineering Co-Op excited to join a promising carbon capture startup working on the development of molten salts as a novel CO2 sorbent material. Mantel is looking for full-time co-op who is interested in working in the lab.

Fall Co-op will be given the opportunity to work on a variety of science and engineering problems including:

  • Characterizing how the thermophysical properties of our sorbent change under different conditions.

  • Improving our understanding of the performance of different material of construction candidates.

  • Running, analyzing and modifying lab-based carbon capture experiments

  • Design and fabrication of new diagnostics or components for our lab-based pilot with access to a fully kitted machine shop, state of the art 3D printing facilities and electronics lab.

  • Model development related to mass and heat transfer.

Depending on interest, science and engineering interns can also be given the opportunity to pursue smaller business projects related to market assessment, partner discovery and technoeconomics.
